William L. Hesse, Rossville, Kansas

This picture of William L. Hesse, Rossville, Kansas, lumber dealer, was taken February 9, 1961. The J. Thomas Lumber Company started in Rossville in the 1880s. James B. Hall was manager for several years and in 1909 Mr. Vawter became manager. William Hesse started work at the yard in 1925, and in 1932 bought a half interest in the business and, in 1943, bought the other half. It then became the Hesse Lumber Company. His sons, Bill and Burns succeeded him in business. This photograph is provided through a pilot project to host unique cultural heritage materials from local libraries on Kansas Memory and was accomplished by mutual agreement between the Northeast Kansas Library System, the Rossville Community Library, and the Kansas Historical Society.

Skaggs Hardware caught fire in 1913. It was so hot and dry and burned so quickly that all efforts were given to saving adjoining buildings. Losses were Skaggs Hardware and stock, $13,000; Binns carpenter shop and barn, $650; Smith heirs and DeVinney residence, $1,500; Dr. Pratt residence, $1,000, and 20 beautiful shade trees. Dr. Henry Fuller Pratt treats patient Harry Jamieson in Rossville, Kansas. Dr. Pratt was born in Kossuth, Ohio, December 8, 1861. He moved to Topeka, Kansas, when he was four. He married Jennie DeVinney in 1888. He practiced medicine in Rossville, Kansas, from 1885-1887 and 1895-1919. He served as the first president of the Peoples State Bank from 1909-1919 and was a member of several organizations. This picture was taken December 22, 1960.
