Colonel Titus sword
Date: between 1850 and 1855
A gilded brass-hilted Artillery Officer sword and scabbard. This sword was taken from Colonel Henry Theodore Titus (1822-1881) during an attack against himself and 18 other proslavery men on August 16, 1856 near Lecompton, Kansas. Sword has straight, single-edged polished steel blade, 28" long. Obverse side of blade has acid-etched floral scroll designs with two flags in center. Reverse side etched in similar floral design and American eagle with inscribed ribbon in his beak. Wooden grip covered with two mother-of-pearl plaques, grooved to hold gilded wire wrapping. Ferrule at base of grip decorated with oak leaf motif. Pommel case in form of closed plumed helmet, facing obverse side. Knuckle-bow decorated with floral designs. Quillon terminates above blade in disc shape.

Saber
Date: between 1860 and 1875
Non-regulation Civil War era officer's saber and scabbard. The base of the blade is marked "Solingen" on one side and F.A.H." [Friedrich Herder Abraham Sohn] on the other. Half-basket guard and fishskin grip. Belonged to George A. Forsythe, commander at the Battle of Beecher Island.

Spanish American War saber

Date: between 1895 and 1899
A presentation saber with steel scabbard. The saber has a narrow blade, etched on both sides with patriotic decorations and a gilt brass hilt with a silver grip wrapped with thin braid wire. The scabbard has a brass throat, rings and drag, which has cast sunburst design on both sides. Major John M. Brown of Topeka originally owned the saber. Brown served with the 23rd Kansas Volunteer Infantry, which was composed entirely of African American men. He was stationed at San Luis, Cuba, during the Spanish American War, and commanded the 1st Battalion.
